Installation & Maintenance

General guidance for porcelain, ceramic, terrazzo and terracotta tile. Check the product specifications for approved uses and follow the installation material manufacturers’ instructions. Not every tile is suitable for floors, showers, outdoor use or freezing conditions.

Before installation:

Use a qualified tile installer. Inspect tile before cutting or setting, set aside damaged pieces and blend cartons for a balanced appearance. Confirm the layout and grout-joint spacing before work begins.

Install over a clean, flat, stable substrate suitable for the tile and its weight. Resolve moisture or movement issues first.

Installation:

Choose mortar, grout and membranes compatible with the tile, substrate and intended use. Follow the specified joint widths and curing times. Check mortar coverage during setting and support tile edges and corners; do not use isolated spots of adhesive.

Wet areas require an appropriate waterproofing system. Tile and grout alone are not waterproof. Provide movement joints where required, including perimeters and changes of plane; do not fill these joints with rigid grout.

Test grout and cleanup methods on spare tile for staining or scratching. Remove residue promptly with an approved method. Use suitable cutting equipment, silica-dust controls and protective equipment.

After installation:

Allow mortar and grout to cure as directed before traffic, cleaning or water exposure. Protect the surface from construction debris.

Soho Surfaces tile does not require sealing. Follow the grout manufacturer’s sealing and care requirements separately.

Everyday care:

Sweep or vacuum loose grit. Clean with a soft cloth or mop and a pH-neutral cleaner suitable for the tile finish. Rinse and remove excess water. Wipe spills promptly; use entrance mats and furniture pads.

Avoid acidic cleaners, abrasive pads and unapproved waxes or coatings. Test new cleaners in an inconspicuous area. Seek product-specific advice for persistent stains, mineral deposits or surface damage.

Notes by tile body:

Porcelain - Use mortar approved for porcelain. Treat polished and decorative finishes gently, and confirm suitability for the intended location.

Ceramic - Use only floor-rated tile on floors. Protect glazed and decorative surfaces from scratching; confirm wet-area and exterior suitability.

Terrazzo - Choose setting materials compatible with the binder and any moisture sensitivity. Avoid acidic spills and cleaners, which can damage cement or stone components.

Terracotta - Allow for natural shade and size variation. Use setting materials suited to its absorbency and finish. Do not soak tile unless instructed by the supplier, and avoid flooding during cleaning.
